Greg’s Border States Contest Prep 2010
Last year, I decided to once again compete and take the stage at a regional bodybuilding show put on the the NPC (The National Physique Committee).
This is my journey towards competing in the 2010 Border States Championship.
While I realize most of my clients just want to get themselves into lose weight, get themselves into better shape, or simply get healthier, and have no interest in bodybuilding whatsoever, I thought it would be great to share some of what I went through over my 14 week contest prep which allowed me to drop 42 lbs in that time, and hopefully inspire you to take the steps you need to take to achieve your goals.
I strongly beleive that my training and participation in the sport of bodybuilding gives me, and the rest of the trainers at OC Trainer, a distinct edge and advantage for my clients that few other personal trainers have: I, and all the trainers who work with me, ALL know how to drop a lot of weight quickly and get our physiques in the best possible shape for these competitions. We have all done it time and time again, and we pass this knowlege, and our experiences and techniques to our clients: Moms, dads, students, CEOs, office workers and all. Oh, and don’t worry… we won’t make you look like a bodybuilder… even if you wanted to, that takes years and years of very specific training.
The Journey starts.
In my journey from 228lbs. to 186.5lbs in 14 weeks I did a lot of thinking. I realized that what I like most about this sport is not the competing, its the art and science of changing my body through diet and exercise. With dedication and education I can change my body (and my clients) to incredible levels really quickly. In just a few months I can get my body or yours into the kind of conditioning that no movie star, musician, sports celebrity can rival.
I love the discipline of the sport, but the competing is just a means to an end. Knowing I have to wear a speedo on stage in 3 months definitely makes it easier to get up early in the morning and do my 45 minutes of cardio. Every time I compete I learn something new and transfer that knowledge onto my clients, which makes me a better trainer.
Why on earth did I decide to do this?
Nobody said it was going to be easy, but work = rewards.
“This doesn’t seem worth it” kept running through my head during the intense training leading up to the competition. For 14 weeks I vowed to bust my ass and do my best and see this through. No matter where I place, bodybuilding, unlike any sport. gives you a privilege that no other sport has…the ability to wear your “uniform” all the time! You may be the world’s greatest tennis player, but unless you tell people, they have no idea. Bodybuilders get a uniform that we carry everywhere, and this is the privilege I enjoy most about competing. Trophies don’t mean a thing your physique “is” the trophy.
Why did I sign up for this? I sit here, by myself, covered in tanning products and oil while my heart beats thick dehydrated blood and my stomach is in knots from starvation. I hear the promoter call out “Men’s unlimited Light Heavies lets go!”
This is it, all my labor and dieting comes down to the next 5 minutes. Over a hundred workouts, countless reps, sets, and protein shakes. 14 weeks of brutal diet all on the line. I line up and begin the slow ascent up the hallway to the bright lights of the stage. As I walk on stage, my nerves settle, and autopilot ensues. What happens is out of my control at this point and I am happy to be that much closer to being finished with this chapter in my life.
Everyone is sizing everyone up, everyone is nervous. Slowly the judges begin to compare the group, calling poses and studying the subtle differences in size, shape and symmetry. Every pose is an exercise in hard labor, my body shakes uncontrollably due to fatigue and dehydration, but I will be damned if I give in now. This was my 10th show or so, and this was one of the best classes of physiques I have ever competed against, I am honored to be competitive among these guys.
Since the show… back to the real world, uniform on, working with others to achieve their own personal goals.
It’s been 4 weeks since I competed, and although I didn’t win, I am still in great shape and enjoy my uniform every day. The completion of the competition has made me really enjoy m freedom from the endless structure of bodybuilding.
I have only gained back 6lbs since my show and I am holding onto being very lean. I want to see what is maintainable realistically so I can coach others. It has been said that the best teachers are those who don’t possess the best genetics but work harder than everyone else. I would say that is an accurate description of me. It hasn’t stopped me from loving what I do.
